history

There was already a settlement in the area of Treignac in Gallo-Roman times, of which the remains of tombs are still preserved on the Champ de Monteil .

Around the year 1000, the Vézère was built in a bend in the river called presqu'île (peninsula) on an almost completely inaccessible, rocky elevation in a castle. A viguerie is documented here as early as the 11th century .

In the High Middle Ages , the first settlements were built around the churches of Saint-Martin, Saint-Léobon and Saint-Jean. In 1284 Treignac was made a free city. At this time the fortifications were built, which included three gates, three villages and three castles. Today only the Porte Charibande remains of the complex . The castle and town became an important castellany of the House of Comborn , which was subordinate to the Duke of Aquitaine and thus from 1152 to the end of the Hundred Years War in 1453 with the House of Plantagenet under the English crown. With the French victory, the place fell to the French crown and came into the possession of the House of Pompadour through inheritance in the 16th century.

During the French Revolution , the castle was completely destroyed and the city wall torn down.

The Pont Finot (1824) and Pont Bargy (1840) bridges were built in the first half of the 19th century .

On July 20, 1904, the Seilhac – Treignac railway line was opened, but it has been closed since 1970.

In 2000 the Canoe and Kayak World Championships were held here.

Population development

The population of Treignac has been declining almost continuously since the early 1960s. The cause of the population decline is the clearly negative birth rate, which could not be compensated for by the ongoing immigration from other parts of France to the town. At the 1999 census, approximately 50% of the population was 60 years of age or older.

Culture and sights

As one of the most beautiful villages in France , Treignac has a historic cityscape that is well worth seeing. In addition to several town houses from the 15th and 16th centuries , some of which are equipped with defensive cores , there are numerous other buildings under special protection as monument historique :

  • The covered market hall was built in the 15th century.
  • The town hall and the former Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix chapel were built in the 17th century, when the Collège was also founded, a former private school with stair towers at the entrance gate and facade.
  • The old bridge over the Vézère was built in the 13th century.
  • The church was built in the 15th century, the old penitential chapel in the 17th century.
