history
The name of the municipality goes back to the martyr Quiricus or Saint Cyr , whose name was often changed to Saint Cirgues in the south of France . But the name of the municipality has changed several times in the course of history. In the 14th century the place was called Saint Cirgues près Merle , during the revolution Cirgues d'Eyge and it was not until 1920 that it was called Saint-Cirgues-la-Loutre . But where does the unusual place name (in German: Saint-Cirgues-der Otter ) come from? This is told by a legend that is recorded in the church of the community: The builder of the church was upset every morning because his day's work had collapsed overnight. In order to conjure up his fate, he threw his hammer with the will that the church be built where it falls. When the hammer fell, it killed an otter in a fish pond. This legend is also symbolized in the municipal coat of arms.
