Espartignac ( Espartinhac in Occitan ) is a French municipality with 441 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Correze in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality is a member of the Pays d'Uzerche municipal association . The inhabitants call themselves Espartignacois (es).
geography
The municipality is located in the Massif Central at the foot of the Plateau de Millevaches on the left side of the upper reaches of the Vézère .
Tulle , the prefecture of the department, is about 25 kilometers southeast, Brive-la-Gaillarde about 35 kilometers southwest and Uzerche about 4 kilometers slightly northwest. The place is about four kilometers from exit 45 of the A20 autoroute .
Neighboring municipalities of Espartignac are Eyburie in the north, Pierrefitte in the northeast, Saint-Jal in the east, Lagraulière in the southeast, Perpezac-le-Noir in the south, Vigeois in the southwest and Uzerche in the west and northwest.
history
The name Espartinac comes from the Celtic - Roman language area and refers to the homestead (Celtic suffix: acum) and the owner of this property, Spartinius, the homestead of Spartinius. The Saint Martial church has been known since the 11th century. However, traces of settlement from prehistoric times can be found in the area around Espartignac, including the dolmen La Maison du Loup as a witness of the megalithic era . This also included a "trunk road" from the Bronze and Iron Ages between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean , which was used until the Middle Ages and crossed the Vézère here.
