The St. Mary's Stadium is a football stadium in Southampton . It is the venue for the home games of Southampton FC . The 32,505 seat stadium was inaugurated in 2001, replacing The Dell stadium , where Southampton has played since 1898.
It was approved by the UEFA in the stadium category 4 classified and therefore fulfills the conditions to the venue for the final of any UEFA Europa League to be. The attendance record dates back to April 28, 2012, when Southampton beat Coventry City 4-0 in the Football League Championship in front of 32,363 spectators .
Structure / capacity
The 32,505 seats are completely covered. There is a video screen behind each goal. The four grandstands are named after the districts in which they point:
- Main stand (towards the east): Itchen stand
- Back straight (towards west): Kingsland Stand
- Behind the gate (towards the south): Chapel Stand
- Behind the gate (northbound): Northam Stand
Basically, the stadium has space for 32,689 visitors (including the press and seats for the club's leadership). But by separating home and guest fans, this capacity cannot be achieved.
Surname
Initially the stadium was called "The Friends Provided St Mary's Stadium". The management initially had the plan to name the venue after the sponsors. This displeased the fans who wanted a traditional name. After further protests, the new sponsor Flybe.com decided in 2006 not to exercise the naming rights to the stadium.
