Geoffroy du Breuil

Geoffroy du Breuil , also called Geoffroy de Vigeois , (Latin: Gaufredus or Galfredus ; † 1184 ) was a French clergyman and chronicler in the 12th century.

Life

Gottfried came from a lower noble family of the Limousin and joined the order of the Benedictines in the Abbey of Saint-Martial of Limoges . In 1170 he became a monk in the priory of La Souterraine and in 1178 he was elected prior of the monastery cell of Saint-Pierre de Vigeois . He died in or shortly after 1184.

He wrote a chronicle covering the years 994 to 1184, which dealt, among other things, with the First Crusade and regional history. Gottfried was the first chronicler to use the term "Albigensians" ( hæreticos Albigenses ) for the Cathar community in an entry for the year 1181 , as he localized the city of Albi as their place of origin.
