Ludwig Theodor Heuss (born September 18, 1961 in Basel ) is a German-Swiss doctor and publisher. Heuss is chief physician at the Clinic for Internal Medicine and a member of the hospital management team at the Zollikerberg Hospital on the outskirts of Zurich . He is also the publisher of the Schwabe publishing group , which was founded in 1488 and is the world's oldest still existing publishing house . He is chairman of the Theodor-Heuss-Stiftung and deputy chairman of the board of trustees of the Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit .

Profession and career

After graduating from the Humanist Gymnasium in Basel , Heuss studied at the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel from 1981 to 1987 , where he also received his doctorate in medicine in 1988 and habilitation in the field of gastroenterology in 2005 . He completed his advanced training as a specialist in internal medicine (1993) and gastroenterology (1998) at the university hospitals in Basel and Freiburg im Breisgau . In Switzerland, he was politically active from 1991 to 1999 as the central president of the Association of Swiss Assistant and Senior Doctors (VSAO) and from 1994 to 2006 as a member of the central board of the Association of Swiss Doctors (FMH) . Between 2000 and 2002 he completed an MBA course at the University of St. Gallen . Scientifically, he mainly deals with aspects of sedation in gastroenterological endoscopies and general health policy issues.

When he joined the Schwabe printing and publishing house, he pursued a realignment of the company and the formation of the Schwabe publishing group, whose program he was jointly responsible for as a publisher. In 2017 he founded a branch in Berlin. In addition to the traditional science publisher Schwabe , the Schwabe group also includes the non-fiction publisher of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung NZZ-Libro, the original Bern-based fiction, non-fiction and sound publishing company Zytglogge , and the English-language Bergli Books Verlag.

Theodor Heuss Foundations

In 2003 Heuss was elected chairman of the Stuttgart- based Theodor Heuss Foundation . In 2009 he transformed the organization into a non-profit foundation under civil law. Under his chairmanship were u. a. Rita Süssmuth , Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker and Daniel Cohn-Bendit as well as the artist Christo were honored with the Theodor Heuss Prize and various people and initiatives were awarded the Theodor Heuss Medal, including In 2017 Aslı Erdoğan , who was due to an exit ban through Turkey could not appear in person for the award.

Heuss is also deputy chairman of the board of trustees of the Federal President-Theodor-Heuss-Haus foundation .

Heuss has been a member since 2008 and since 2010, together with Liane Knüppel , Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. He has been a member of the program committee since 2011, including as deputy chairman since 2015, and in this function he has a direct influence on the subject orientation of the organization. He was repeatedly laudatory at the award of the Freedom Prize of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation to Kaspar Villiger (2016) and Joachim Gauck (2018).

The former Federal President Theodor Heuss and his wife Elly Heuss-Knapp , as well as the individual psychologist Annemarie Wolff-Richter were grandparents of Ludwig Theodor Heuss, Ernst Ludwig Heuss and Ursula Heuss-Wolff were his parents. Heuss has German and Swiss citizenship .
