history

In November 1488 Johannes Petri von Langendorf near Hammelburg in Franconia , who had learned the art of printing and writing in Mainz during Gutenberg's lifetime , bought Basel citizenship and the guild law of the saffron guild. As a result, he published partly independently, but mostly in a printing and publishing partnership with Johannes Amerbach and Johannes Froben . After his death, his nephew Adam Petri took over the business and reprinted almost all of Martin Luther's important writings . Adam's son Heinrich Petri printed literature from theology to classical authors and contemporary history to mathematics and natural science, medicine and alchemy, including numerous compilations and encyclopedias.

After Heinrich Petri's death in 1579, Sebastian Henricpetri continued the business for 50 years. Jacob Bertsche took over the company from his heirs in 1665, which was then transferred to the Schweigerhauserische Verlagbuchhandlung via the Lüdin family and the Decker printer dynasty . After several redesigns, this was taken over by Benno Schwabe in 1868 . Benno Schwabe's descendants led the company into the 20th century, supported from 1926 by his grandson Christian Overstolz, who took over the company in 1963. This was finally converted from a general partnership into a family-owned stock corporation.

In 2009 the publishing house became the first Swiss company to join the German Book Trade Association .
