Adam Petri was born around 1454 in Langendorf near Hammelburg . Like his uncle Johannes Petri , he moved to Basel, where he had lived since around 1480 and worked as a printer. In 1507 he received the citizenship of Basel. In the following year he married the Basel bourgeois daughter Anna Selber. After he had probably taken in 1507, the printing house of his uncle John, his developed Offizin become a major printing workshop. Petri's prints were u. a. illustrated by Urs Graf , Hans Holbein and Conrad Schnitt. As authors, editors and proofreaders, he employed a number of well-known personalities such as Konrad Pelikan , the young Sebastian Münster , Beatus Rhenanus , Ulrich Hugwald and his relative Johannes Petreius .

Adam Petri mainly printed religious edification literature and works of practical theology . From 1517 it was primarily Reformation publications that left his printing works. Among the more than 300 prints from the Officina Adae Petri are 88 writings by Martin Luther . He also published works by other German reformers such as Johannes Bugenhagen , Hartmuth von Cronberg, Philipp Melanchthon , Andreas Karlstadt and a few writings by the Swiss reformers Huldrych Zwingli , Joachim Vadian and Johannes Oekolampad .

His edition of the De ecclesia by Jan Hus , which appeared in 1520 under the title Liber egregius de unitate ecclesiae, cuius autor periit in concilio Constantiensi , received much attention . It was amazing how quickly Petri reprinted Luther's translation of the Bible. Just under a quarter of a year after the September Testament was published, The New Testament appeared in December 1522, yetz and quite green teutscht . From 1523 to 1525, Petri Luther's Old Testament, the original Hebrew war, was printed in the most faithful German way .

Adam Petri died on November 15, 1527. His wife Anna Selber married the cosmographer and Hebrew professor Sebastian Münster in 1530 . His son Heinrich Petri , born in 1508, continued to run the shop successfully.
