Ulrich Hugwald , also Huldreich Mutius , (* 1496 in Wilen ( Gottshaus ); † January 24, 1571 in Basel ) was a Swiss scholar, teacher and writer from the Reformation .

Life

Ulrich Hugwald was born in Wilen, near Bischofszell ( Thurgau ). He probably studied first in Vienna and from 1519 on at the theological faculty of Basel. At the same time he started working as a proofreader and editor for the Basel printer Adam Petri . Since 1520 he has also published his own critical and reformatory texts. He was in correspondence with several reformers, including Vadian , Michael Stifel , Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples and Guillaume Farel .

In addition to his work at the book printer Petri, Hugwald opened a private rhetoric school for prospective lawyers and preachers. In the autumn of 1524 he met Thomas Müntzer with Oekolampad in Basel and discussed the baptism of faith with him . As a result, he joined the Basler Anabaptists around 1525 and was imprisoned for this. After a stay as a turner and farmer in Thurgau, he returned to Basel and distanced himself from the Anabaptist movement.

Until 1529 he taught at the University of Basel and from 1535 at the Latin School at Burg in Basel. In 1539 he published a multi-volume chronicle De Germanorum prima origine . After obtaining the degree of a Magister Artium in 1541 , he was appointed professor at the University of Basel in 1542 and taught logic , ethics and poetics . He sold his house at the castle to his friend Thomas Platter in 1549 . Hugwald died in Basel in January 1571.
