Urs Graf: Council of war on the piano procession

Urs Graf the Elder (* around 1485 in Solothurn ; † before October 13, 1528 ) was a glass painter , copper engraver , draftsman for woodcuts and goldsmith .

Life

In addition to his work as a craftsman in Basel and Solothurn, Graf led an adventurous, wild life as a traveler . Graf's artistic work is of high quality within the framework of Renaissance art in Switzerland. Almost nothing has survived from his glass paintings . The hand drawings, copper engravings and drawings for the woodcut that have been preserved are mostly moral images, depictions of the camp life of the mercenaries and genre figures in a coarse, sensual approach. Noteworthy are his dynamic lines and a certain ironic distance in his graphics, which are reminiscent of Hans Holbein the Younger in the liveliness and freshness of the depiction . By 2011, around 160 sheets could be assigned to his graphic work.

Urs Graf the Elder was the father of Urs Graf the Younger .
