Johannes Petri (* 1441 in Langendorf near Hammelburg , Franconia ; † 1511 in Basel ) was a German printer .

Life

After Petri in Mainz the printing press ( Gutenberg was still alive), and type casting had learned he was after the founding of the University of Basel (1460) in Basel down where in 1488 he the civil rights acquired and in the Safranzunft was taken. He was first mentioned as a printer in 1496 in the Concordantiae maiores biblie by Conrad von Halberstadt, printed with Johann Froben . Also known are four joint prints with Froben, six with Johannes Amerbach and Froben, including Latin Bibles and works by Augustine , most recently the statute of the Carthusians in 1510 and the canon law collections in six parts in 1511/12. Petri's sole printing is only the works of Ambrosius from 1506. With this he founded the Petrinische Offizin - a printing company that can be traced back to Schwabe AG through several changes of ownership and name . This has been running the Johannes Petri publishing house as a subsidiary since 2010 . The direct successor of Johannes Petri was his nephew Adam Petri .
