Targa Florio 1967
The 51st Targa Florio , also 51 ° Targa Florio, Manifestazione Automobilistica Internazionale de Velocita, Piccolo Circuito delle Madonie, Sicilia , took place in Sicily on May 14, 1967 and was the fifth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
To another overall victory on the Piccolo circuito delle Madonie to achieve the team leadership of the continued work team of Porsche in 1967 , a seven works cars. Fritz Huschke von Hanstein reported three Porsche 910s in the prototype class with more than 2 liters of displacement in order to achieve overall victory. Three more 910s should ensure success in the racing class up to 2 liters displacement. The three plus 2-liter cars each had a 2.2-liter eight-cylinder boxer engine with the type designation 771. Three 910s had the conventional 2-liter six-cylinder boxer engine type 901. The eight-cylinder models were driven by the Paul Hawkins / Rolf teams Stommelen , Jo Siffert / Hans Herrmann and Gerhard Mitter / Colin Davis . In the six-cylinder prototype sat Leo Cella / Giampiero Biscaldi , Vic Elford / Jochen Neerpasch as well as Umberto Maglioli and Udo Schütz . Due to its size, the roof of Maglioli and Schütz's car had to be opened. In the GT class, the French ski driver Jean-Claude Killy and the journalist Bernard Cahier entered the race in a Porsche 911S , finished seventh in the overall standings and clinched class victory.
Compared with the Porsche team made the racing team of Ferrari modest. There was a Ferrari 330P4 for Ludovico Scarfiotti and Nino Vaccarella and a Dino 246S for Günter Klass and Mario Casoni . Autodelta , the racing division of Alfa Romeo , organized the racing debut of the Alfa Romeo T33 , the first Tipo 33 from the long series of these Alfa Romeo prototypes. Four of the cars equipped with 2-liter V8 engines were brought to Sicily. Nanni Galli , Ignazio Giunti , Andrea de Adamich , Jean Rolland , Giacomo Russo , Nino Todaro , Joakim Bonnier and Giancarlo Baghetti were used as drivers . The Chaparral 2F was eagerly awaited. The car with the huge rear wing, powered by a Chevrolet engine, was driven this time by Hap Sharp instead of the regular driver Mike Spence . The second driver was Phil Hill . The specialist audience was particularly interested in how the drivers would get along with the fast but heavy car on the narrow Sicilian village streets.
The training on the Friday before the race day took place in sunny summer weather. The fastest in training was Nino Vaccarella in the Ferrari 330P4, who needed 37: 12.200 minutes for one lap. The usual start rules applied on the day of the race. The slowest car in practice started first; then the remaining cars followed in reverse order at intervals of 20 seconds. Pole-setter Vaccarella was the last starter to hit the slopes. For Scuderia Ferrari, the race ended in an early disaster. 500,000 spectators lined the route and most of them hoped for the victory of the local hero Vaccarella. In the first round he fulfilled the Sicilians' hopes and took the lead, which ended abruptly in the second. While driving through Collesano , the Ferrari hit a curb in a hairpin bend. The right suspensions destroyed in the process made it impossible to continue driving. Since Günter Klass also had an accident in the Dino in the second round, the debacle for the Scuderia was perfect.
Porsche also lost a car in an accident on the second lap when Gerhard Mitter fell off the track in second place and was unable to continue. In the beginning, last year's winner Herbert Müller in the Scuderia Filipinetti - Ferrari 412P was in the lead . Even if not a works car, it was at least a Ferrari at the top. Paul Hawkins in the best-placed Porsche could not follow Müller's pace. Phil Hill moved the chaparral safely over the mountain roads, he could not intervene in the lead duel. Hill had to take care of the car, as the team only had two chassis in Europe and thus had to contest the upcoming races at the Nürburgring and Le Mans . After the first driver change - Jean Guichet for Müller and Stommelen for Hawkins - the Porsche (Stommelen) passed the Ferrari (Guichet) to take first place in the overall standings. When Müller took the wheel again, he shortened the gap to Stommelen, but retired on the seventh lap due to a gearbox failure. The Chaparral, which was solidly in fourth place, also failed on the eighth lap. A puncture caused damage to the body. To avoid causing major damage, Sharp parked the car. The total failure of Alfa Romeo was sealed by the failure of Jean Rolland's car in third place, three laps before the end. For Porsche there was complete triumph, victory in the overall classification and in the 2-liter racing class. Behind the winners Stommelen / Hawkins, two other works cars finished on the podium of the top three.
