Hap Sharp was a close friend of Jim Hall and was closely associated with his Chaparral project. Sharp drove for Hall in the USRRC sports car series and was fifth in the championship in 1964. With Roger Penske as a team partner, he was victorious in the Nassau Trophy that same year . In 1965 the championship went up, and at the end of the season Sharp was able to look forward to third place overall. The highlight of the year was overall victory in the Sebring 12 Hours with Jim Hall. In addition, there were six more victories including the renewed success in Nassau.
After his resignation, the American became silent. The US motorsport world was therefore in shock when it became known that he had committed suicide in 1993. The trigger for this was the previous diagnosis of cancer.
