The 1962 German Grand Prix took place on August 5, 1962 at the Nürburgring and was the sixth race of the 1962 World Cup .
Reports
background
After Ferrari because of a strike of the metal processing industry in Italy at the French Grand Prix could not participate and the Grand Prix of Great Britain was launched only with a cart, the team had in this race again all vehicles available and started with four cars for Phil Hill , Giancarlo Baghetti , Ricardo Rodríguez and Lorenzo Bandini . Baghetti, Rodríguez and Bandini returned to the automobile world championship after several races break, for Bandini it was only the second race of the season.
Jack Brabham drove a private Lotus 24 until the British Grand Prix . The car that he himself designed for his Brabham team had not been used before because of technical difficulties. The car made its debut in this race and was named Brabham BT3 . Unlike Lotus with the Lotus 25 , the designer did without a monocoque and, like the other competitors, used a steel frame. This decision was made because a monocoque would be too difficult to repair if damaged. The cockpit interior was designed wider than that of the competition to give the driver more freedom of movement. The color of the car was recognizable by the light blue paneling with a gold stripe in the middle. The car was powered by a V8 Climax engine.
There were other changes in the teams with private cars. Jackie Lewis drove his last race for the Ecurie Galloise , which withdrew from the automobile world championship. Lewis intended to take a year off from racing but then decided to retire from racing altogether. The Equipe Nationale Belge was also registered for a final Grand Prix, Lucien Bianchi drove an ENB , the only car that had been designed by the team itself. For Wolfgang Seidel , too, the car world championship ended. After disputes about the entry fee, he criticized the organizer and received a lifelong ban, which was lifted after two years. But Seidel stopped racing after that. Gunther Seiffert was registered as the second driver for his Autosport Team Wolfgang Seidel , but he did not qualify and did not take part in any other Grand Prix. Bernard Collomb drove his last race of the season in a Cooper T53 , Keith Greene for Gilby Engineering his first in a Gilby 62 . The Ecurie Filipinetti reported three cars, Jo Siffert drove a Lotus 21 , Heinz Schiller a Lotus 24 and Heini Walter one in a Porsche 718 . For Schiller and Walter it was their only participation in a race. In addition, Maurice Trintignant drove again for the Rob Walker Racing Team and Nino Vaccarella for the Scuderia SSS Republica di Venezia .
No former winner took part in the German Grand Prix, Ferrari had five successful constructors in previous years, Lotus once. In the drivers 'championship, Graham Hill was just ahead of Jim Clark and Bruce McLaren , in the constructors' championship Lotus was just ahead of BRM and Cooper .
training
A serious accident occurred in the Fuchsröhre section . A camera attached to the rear of Carel Godin de Beaufort's Porsche detached itself from the car and fell on the track. Graham Hill saw this camera too late and drove over it, damaging an oil pipe on his car. Graham Hill spun off the track and had a serious accident. Tony Maggs also had no chance to evade and also went off the track due to the leaking oil. Both drivers survived the accident unharmed, but the vehicles were badly damaged. Graham Hill had previously set a time that was sufficient for qualifying in second place, whereas Maggs started from the back field from position 23.
The pole position reached Dan Gurney at Porsche. For Gurney it was the first pole position of his career, for Porsche it was the only one. It was not until the 2008 Bahrain Grand Prix that a German designer was again on pole position with BMW Sauber . Clark was third ahead of John Surtees and McLaren. Jo Bonnier qualified in sixth ahead of Richie Ginther , Beaufort and Roy Salvadori . The best Ferrari driver was Rodríguez in tenth place, overall Ferrari qualified mainly in the midfield.
For safety reasons, the starting field was limited to 26 vehicles. Thus, out of 30 registered drivers, there were four who did not qualify. These four drivers were Tony Shelly , Seidel, Jay Chamberlain and Seiffert. In addition to the training time, the entry fee also played a role in the case of Seidel, or in the case of Shelly, whether other drivers such as Brabham, for example, were already considered qualified in advance.
Trevor Taylor did not drive enough practice laps to qualify for the race and was therefore initially not allowed to start. However, this decision was withdrawn by the race management and Taylor was allowed to start the race from last place on the grid.
run
On the day of the race there was heavy rain that made the track impassable. The race management decided to postpone the start by more than an hour. When the Grand Prix started after an exploration lap at 3:15 p.m., the track was still wet and more rain began to fall. Clark stopped at the start because he had forgotten to turn on the gasoline pump of his Lotus and fell back to the end of the field due to this mistake. This made Phil Hill third behind Gurney and Graham Hill. Surtees, Bonnier, McLaren and Rodríguez followed on the other places. Taylor had an accident during the first lap of the race and was eliminated.
Graham Hill took the lead on the third lap, setting the fastest lap of the race. After that the rain intensified and the lap times became slower overall. Surtees also overtook Gurney, who was affected by a loose battery, and then tried to close the gap to Graham Hill. But he never got close enough to overtake him. In the early stages of the race, other drivers also had different technical difficulties. Collomb, Trintignant and Salvadori dropped out with gearbox damage, and the oil pressure on Schiller's car dropped. In addition, the race for Bandini was over after the fourth lap after an accident. As the Nürburgring was very hilly and uneven, some drivers had problems with the suspension, as in previous years. Greene, Phil Hill and Lewis were therefore eliminated. For Brabham, too, the Grand Prix ended prematurely on lap nine; his new car had an accelerator pedal defect.
At the front, Graham Hill stayed a few seconds ahead of Surtees, while Clark had fought his way through the entire field to fourth. Graham Hill won his second race of the season after winning at Zandvoort . He later described the Grand Prix as one of his toughest, but also best races, as he had to drive with full concentration under the most difficult conditions and was completely exhausted both physically and mentally. With the victory, he extended his lead in the drivers' standings over Clark, who was fourth, to seven points. With second place in the race, Surtees improved to third and was only two points behind Clark. Gurney took third place, McLaren and Rodríguez scored points for Cooper and Ferrari.
In the constructors' championship, BRM took the lead ahead of Lotus and Cooper. Ferrari lost more places and was only sixth behind Porsche and Lola. It was the only victory at the German Grand Prix for both Graham Hill and BRM. All drivers who had already scored points in the season still had the theoretical chance of becoming world champions, with the constructors all still had the chance of the constructors' championship.
