Tony Shelly (born February 2, 1937 in Wellington , † October 4, 1998 in Taupo ) was a New Zealand racing driver .

Career

The popular New Zealander Shelly was able to win the first major car race in which he participated. He won the Teretonga Grand Prix in 1958 with his private Cooper .

In 1962 Shelly came to Europe and was signed by John Dalton. Although Shelly did not know any of the circuits he raced on, he enjoyed some success. With a Lotus 18 he was third in the Lavant Cup and fifth in the Lombank Trophy. In 1962 he drove his only race in the automobile world championship . At the 1962 British Grand Prix , he retired with an overheated engine. After the failed attempt to qualify for the German Grand Prix , he made another attempt at the Italian Grand Prix . The German Wolfgang Seidel provided him with a Lotus 24 . When he failed to qualify again, Shelly returned to New Zealand.

Shelly raced professionally for two more years and then built up a motor vehicle trading company. He raced as an amateur until the early 1970s.
