Reports
background
Two weeks after John Watson's victory at his home Grand Prix , an unchanged field of participants entered the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim.
Tyrrell driver Eddie Cheever completed the first Grand Prix outing of the new racing car with the designation 011 this weekend . The team also switched from Michelin to Avon tires.
training
The high-speed track with the long straights at the time was ideal for the turbo-powered vehicles, so that Alain Prost was able to qualify for pole position ahead of his Renault team- mate René Arnoux . The two Williams drivers Carlos Reutemann and Alan Jones formed the second row from Didier Pironi and Nelson Piquet , who had not suffered any serious injuries in his accident at Silverstone . Jacques Laffite , Gilles Villeneuve and the two McLaren drivers John Watson and Andrea de Cesaris completed the top ten on the grid.
run
While Prost was able to defend his top position after the start, Arnoux lost second place to Reutemann. On the first of the long straight, Pironi also passed his compatriot. When Piquet started to overtake in the east curve , the two cars touched. Arnoux's right rear tire was damaged, so that he had to go to the pits at the end of the first lap. Meanwhile, Piquet was overtaken by Laffite and Jones.
Pironi retired on the second lap with engine failure, whereupon Prost led ahead of Reutemann, Jones, Laffite and Piquet.
After Jones had overtaken his team-mate Reutemann in the fifth lap, he dueled Prost for the lead, which he finally won on lap 21. Piquet had previously briefly added a three-way battle to the duel, but fell behind Reutemann again on lap 15 due to problems with his tires.
Reutemann's failure on lap 28 due to engine failure brought Héctor Rebaque and Eddie Cheever into the points.
When it started to rain lightly after around two thirds of the race distance, the Brabham BT49 proved to be superior to the Renault RE30 on slippery slopes. Piquet was able to overtake Prost on lap 37. When Jones fell behind due to misfiring and finally had to make a pit stop, Piquet took the lead and defended it to the finish.
