The 2011 German Grand Prix took place on July 24th at the Nürburgring in Nürburg and was the tenth race of the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the British Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 80 points ahead of Mark Webber and 92 points ahead of Fernando Alonso . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 110 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 164 points ahead of Ferrari .

The double-declutching ban that had been introduced one race before was abolished from this race and the regulation that applied at the European Grand Prix came into force again.

At the German Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with medium (white) and soft (yellow) tire compounds , as well as intermediates (light blue) and full wets (orange) for wet conditions . On Friday, the teams also received a new version of the Soft tire for test purposes . In addition, a rule change was decided for this race weekend, according to which the drivers will receive an additional set of intermediates for Friday so that they do not have to save on their tires in wet conditions.

Karun Chandhok returned to Formula 1 this weekend as a driver and represented Jarno Trulli at Lotus-Renault for a Grand Prix.

With Michael Schumacher (four times), Fernando Alonso (twice), Rubens Barrichello , Lewis Hamilton and Webber (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

In the first free practice Alonso achieved the fastest lap ahead of Webber and Vettel. This training took over Nico Hülkenberg the Force India of Paul di Resta and Narain Karthikeyan the HRT of Vitantonio Liuzzi . In the second free practice, Webber was the fastest driver ahead of Alonso and Vettel. In the third free practice, Vettel set the fastest time ahead of Webber and Alonso.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Massa posted the fastest lap. The HRT, Virgin and Lotus pilots and Kamui Kobayashi were eliminated. In the second qualifying segment, Hamilton took the lead. The Toro Rosso and Williams drivers as well as Sergio Pérez , di Resta and Nick Heidfeld were eliminated. In the final section, Webber set the fastest time and achieved pole position ahead of Hamilton and his team-mate Vettel.

After the technical inspection of the racing vehicles, it was found that the fuel in Sébastien Buemi's vehicle was not compliant with the rules. Buemi was then taken out of the classification and had to start from the end of the field. The teams must hand in a gasoline sample before the season, which is checked at random during the season.

run

Hamilton won the race ahead of Alonso and Webber. The race took place continuously in dry weather.

The first three drivers changed their positions more often in the course of the race and were mostly within striking distance of their rivals. A larger gap formed behind them and only three other pilots crossed the finish line within the lead lap.

Vettel did not finish this race in the first two positions for the first time of the season and finished in fourth place.
