The HRT F111 was the second Formula 1 - racing cars of HRT . The car used in the 2011 season was designed by Geoff Willis and Paul White, who made extensive use of supplied components.
technology
Like last year, came eight-cylinder engine of the type CA2011 from Cosworth , the gearbox and the hydraulic were now of Williams taken. According to team director Colin Kolles , the car was "95 percent new"; the technical advisor Geoff Willis, however, spoke in April 2011 of a renewal rate of 80 percent. Regardless of this, observers were of the opinion that the HRT F111 largely corresponded to the predecessor model designed by Dallara , including in the area of the monocoque . KERS was not used.
driver
At the beginning of the season, the Indian Narain Karthikeyan and the Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi formed the driver duo for the F111. After the European Grand Prix , the Australian Daniel Ricciardo took over the cockpit from Karthikeyan.
In the further course of the season Karthikeyan replaced Liuzzi once at the Indian Grand Prix .
2011 season
The season did not start well for HRT. Since the car was only completed very late, the cars were first assembled in the box before the Australian Grand Prix . So could z. B. the new nose developed for the HRT F111 cannot be used because it had not passed the necessary crash tests. The HRT F111 then appeared in Australia with the nose of the HRT F110. Improvisation also had to be made in the area of the suspension. However, both drivers failed in qualifying due to the 107 percent time .
In the second race in Malaysia, both drivers qualified for the race and started from the back row. Neither of the two finished the race - Karthikeyan finished the race after 14 laps with problems with the cooling, Liuzzi gave up eight laps due to damage to the rear wing.
In the following races, the team consolidated and was occasionally able to achieve a better qualifying time with the HRT F111 than the rival team Marussia Virgin .
At the Canadian Grand Prix , Liuzzi finished 13th in a race under difficult weather conditions, which meant the best result of the entire season. Thanks to this placement, they were in eleventh place in the constructors' championship ahead of Virgin at the end of the season.
In total, the HRT F111 took part in 18 of the 19 races. None of the pilots achieved a point placement. An HRT F111 failed eight times, seven of them for technical reasons.
