Georg Stingl

Georg Stingl (born October 28, 1948 in Vienna ) is a professor for dermatology at the Medical University of Vienna and was president of the mathematics and natural sciences class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences from 2011 to 2013.

Scientific career

After graduating from high school in 1966, Georg Stingl studied medicine at the University of Vienna and in 1973 became a sub auspiciis praesidentis Dr. med. univ. doctorate. From 1973 to 1976 he completed his specialist training in dermatology at the I. University Dermatology Clinic in Vienna . During this time he also worked for two years on immunological issues at the Institute for Immunology at the University of Vienna (sponsor: Walter Knapp). From 1977 to 1978 he received a Visiting Fellowship at the National Cancer Institute , Bethesda, to conduct immunological and immune-dermatological research under the sponsors Stephen I. Katz, Ira Green and Ethan M. Shevach .

In 1978 Georg Stingl returned to Austria and became a senior physician at the Clinic for Dermatology and Venereology at the University of Innsbruck (board member: Klaus Wolff ) in order to set up and manage an immunological research laboratory. In 1980 he completed his habilitation there in dermatology and venereology and in 1981 moved as senior physician to the I. University Dermatology Clinic in Vienna (Board of Directors: Klaus Wolff) to take over the management of the “Skin Immunobiology” group. In 1985 Georg Stingl was appointed associate professor (§ 31 UOG) for dermatology and venereology and at the same time head of department.

In 1985 he moved again for a short time to the NCI , this time as a guest researcher, returned a year later to the I. University Dermatology Clinic in Vienna and in 1991 was appointed full professor at the University of Vienna . Since 1992 he has also been head of the clinical department for immunodermatology and infectious skin diseases at the University Clinic for Dermatology in Vienna.

Georg Stingl is a real member of the mathematical and natural science class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . He is the director of the academy computing center, was elected secretary in 2003 and president of the academy's math and science class in 2011. He held this position until July 31, 2013.

His research areas include the immunological functions of the skin as an organ . Georg Stingl discovered the immunological function of the epidermal Langerhans cells and was able to prove that these represent the target structure in an HIV infection via the skin. Further characterizations such as those of the IgE receptors or the identification of autoantigens in patients with atopic dermatitis were carried out later . Georg Stingl u. a. the effect and mechanism of action of immunomodulating drugs.

He is a member of several other scientific societies, such as the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina (member of the Presidium since 2006), the Austrian Society for Dermatology and Venereology (member of the Board since 1988; 1995–1996 President), the European Dermatology Forum (2001–2003 President), the European Society for Dermatological Research (1988–1994 on the board; 1992–1993 president), the American Academy of Dermatology or the Japanese Society for Investigative Dermatology. He is a member of the Austrian AIDS Society (Vice President since 1990), the American Federation of Clinical Research and the Council of the European Macrophage and Dendritic Cell Society. Stingl is also a member of the Austrian Society for Allergology and Immunology , of which he was President from 1998 to 2000.

Georg Stingl is an honorary member of the following associations: American Dermatological Association, Hungarian Society for Dermatology, Hungarian Society for Immunology, Polish Dermatological Society, Association of Rhenish-Westphalian Dermatologists, Societé Francaise de Dermatologie, Finnish Dermatological Society, German Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology and is the corresponding one Member of the Swedish and Swiss Dermatological Societies.

Georg Stingl is the author of more than 400 publications in scientific journals (original articles, reviews and essays). He is (co-) editor in several scientific journals.
