The Austrian Society for Allergology and Immunology (ÖGAI) is a scientific specialist society whose aim is to promote research, teaching and information in the fields of allergology and immunology , especially in Austria . The company is registered as a non-profit association.

history

The ÖGAI was founded on the initiative of the board of directors of the Institute for Immunology at the University of Vienna , Carl Steffen , and the head of the first private Viennese allergy institute, Alois Ferstl. At the constituent general assembly on May 8, 1971, Steffen was elected the first President of the ÖGAI. The ÖGAI was founded with the intention of bringing together the allergologists , clinical immunologists and basic immunological researchers of Austria in a joint company in order to enable the most effective possible cooperation between these disciplines through mutual scientific exchange and to achieve faster progress in the practical application of new findings. In the first few years after its founding, the ÖGAI joined several international umbrella companies that are active in the field of immunology and allergology. The ÖGAI has maintained particularly intensive contacts with the German Society for Immunology and the Hungarian Society for Immunology since the 1970s, which have been intensified in particular through joint conferences . Through years of professional political work , among other things , the ÖGAI achieved that the medical training specialization for immunology specialist was created in Austria as part of the 1993 amendment to the Doctors Act.

activities

The society fulfills the purpose of the association by organizing scientific meetings and conferences for the exchange of scientific knowledge in the field of allergology and immunology and by promoting the dialogue between clinically and scientifically active allergists and immunologists. The ÖGAI promotes young scientists in the field of allergology and immunology in Austria by awarding specialist prizes and awards for special research achievements and by holding scientific training symposia. In addition, it creates guidelines for allergological diagnostics , especially for Austria, within the framework of international umbrella organizations but also across borders in cooperation with related specialist societies in other countries. For example, since 1994 the ÖGAI has been actively involved in the organization of the irregular Tatra Immunology Conferences in Slovakia , at which internationally leading immunologists teach young scientists the basics of immunology. The ÖGAI maintains in-depth relationships and scientific exchange with the relevant specialist societies in its direct neighbors, especially with those of the successor states of Austria-Hungary .

The ÖGAI holds a large annual conference, usually in autumn, at which experimental and clinical researchers from all over Austria meet to present and exchange their latest research results. In this context, further specialized training symposia take place, to which international researchers from the two specialist areas of the society are invited as speakers. Furthermore, the ÖGAI is the first point of contact for laypersons and especially for Austrian authorities and social insurance companies for relevant technical questions .

Prizes and awards given

The society has been awarding the Karl Landsteiner Prize annually since 1988 for outstanding achievements in the field of basic immunological research. She has also been awarding the Karl Landsteiner Medal at irregular intervals since 2004 for achievements in the field of immunology . In addition, the Society has awarded the Clemens von Pirquet Prize for allergy research every year since 1986 and the Clemens von Pirquet Medal at irregular intervals since 1988 to honor merited allergists. In addition, the ÖGAI awards several dissertation prizes each year to promote young academics .
