Benjamin Eggleston (* 3. January 1816 in Corinth , Saratoga County , New York ; † 9. February 1888 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) was an American politician of the Republican Party . From 1865 to 1869 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the first  congressional district of the state of Ohio.

biography

Benjamin Eggleston was born in Corinth. There he attended public schools. In 1831 he moved with his parents to Hocking County, Ohio. He later moved to Cleveland and worked on a narrowboat . Later he owned several boats himself. In 1845 he settled in Cincinnati. There he was elected chairman of the city council. In 1860 he was a delegate for his party at the Republican National Convention in Chicago . From 1862 to 1865 he was a member of the State Senate .

In 1865 he was elected to the US House of Representatives for his party as a representative of the 1st District of Ohio. He served there until 1869. He could not be run for re-election. His successor was the Democrat Peter W. Strader . From 1880 to 1881 he sat again in the Ohio Senate.

He died in Cincinnati in 1888 and was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery .
