James A. Norton (1899)

James Albert Norton (born November 11, 1843 in Bettsville , Seneca County , Ohio , †  July 24, 1912 in Tiffin , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1903 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Norton attended his home public schools and Tiffin High School . Between 1862 and 1865 he served in various units in the Union Army during the Civil War . He rose to the rank of first lieutenant. After the war he studied medicine. From 1867 to 1879 he practiced as a doctor. After studying law, he was also admitted to the bar in 1874. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1873 and 1879 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives , of which he was president in 1877 and 1878. From 1887 to 1892 he served as his party's state chairman for Ohio. From 1885 to 1892 he was a full-time district auditor. From 1889 to 1895 he was also the state commissioner for railways and telegraphs. He then worked as a lawyer for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad .

In the congressional elections of 1896 Norton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Republican Stephen Ross Harris on March 4, 1897 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1903 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . In 1902 he was not re-elected. After serving in the US House of Representatives, James Norton returned to work for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad . He died on July 24, 1912 in Tiffin, where he was also buried.
