John Sloane

John Sloane (born 1779 in York , Pennsylvania , †  May 15, 1856 in Wooster , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1829 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In his early teens, John Sloane came to what is now Ohio and attended preparatory schools. He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . Between 1803 and 1805 and again in 1807 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Ohio , as its speaker he temporarily served. From 1808 to 1816 he worked as a receiver of public money for the tax authorities in Canton . He then practiced this profession from 1816 to 1819 in Wooster. During the British-American War he was a Colonel in the State Militia.

In the 1818 congressional election , Sloane was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Peter Hitchcock on March 4, 1819 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1829 . Since 1823 he represented the then newly established twelfth district of his state there. In the 1820s Sloane joined the movement against later US President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the short-lived National Republican Party . From 1821 to 1829 he was chairman of the election committee.

In 1831 Sloane was employed in the Wayne County Court of Appeals Administration. He worked there for a few years. Between 1841 and 1844 he was the successor to William Trevitt from the office of Secretary of State in his home state. From 1850 to 1853 he served as Treasurer of the United States in the US Treasury Department. John Sloane died on May 15, 1856 in Wooster, where he was also buried.
