William W. Armstrong

William Wallace Armstrong (born March 18, 1833 in New Lisbon , Ohio , † April 21, 1905 in Cleveland , Ohio) was an American printer , editor and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1863 to 1865 .

Career

William Wallace Armstrong was born in Columbiana County about four years before the economic crisis of 1837 . He lived there until he moved to Tiffin ( Seneca County ) in 1847. He then did an apprenticeship as a printer at Seneca Advertiser . He later became an editor and bought the newspaper in 1854. From 1857 to 1861 he was the postmaster of Tiffin. Armstrong married Sarah Virginia Hedges on November 10, 1857. The couple had three children: two sons who died in childhood and a daughter named Isabella Hedges (* 1864).

The Democratic State Convention nominated him in 1862 for the post of Secretary of State. In the later election that year he defeated incumbent Wilson S. Kennon , who belonged to the Republican Party . Armstrong served a two-year term. When he ran for re-election in 1864, he suffered a massive defeat against Republican William Henry Smith . To this day he is the youngest man to ever hold this office.

After his tenure ended in 1865, Armstrong moved to Cleveland. He acquired The Plain Dealer and worked there as an editor until 1883. In 1868 he testified in President Andrew Johnson's impeachment proceedings . Armstrong attended the Democratic National Conventions as a delegate in 1868, 1880, and 1884 .

In 1881 he turned down a nomination for governor of Ohio. Armstrong was Cleveland Postmaster from 1887 to 1891. In 1895 he ran for the post of Cleveland City Treasurer. Armstrong died on April 21, 1905 at his home in Cleveland and was then interred in Greenlawn Cemetery in Tiffin.
