James Sidney Robinson

James Sidney Robinson (born October 14, 1827 in Mansfield , Ohio , †  January 14, 1892 in Kenton , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1885 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Robinson attended the public schools in his home country and then worked in the printing trade. Since December 31, 1845 he lived in Kenton, where he published and edited the Kenton Republican newspaper . In 1856 he was employed as Chief Clerk of the Administration in the Ohio House of Representatives . During the Civil War , Robinson served as an officer in the Union Army . He rose to become Brigadier General of Volunteers and Brevet Major General . He took part in several battles and campaigns. These included the Battle of Gettysburg , in which he was wounded, and General William T. Sherman's campaign through Georgia and South Carolina . Between 1877 and 1879 Robinson was state chairman of the Republican Party in Ohio. In 1880, he became the Ohio State Government Railroad and Telegraph Commissioner.

In the congressional election of 1880 Robinson was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat George L. Converse on March 4, 1881 . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on January 12, 1885 . Between 1885 and 1889 he was the successor to James W. Newman Secretary of State of Ohio. He died on January 14, 1892 in Kenton, where he was also buried.
