James W. Newman

James Wirt Newman (born March 12, 1841 in Highland County , Ohio , † January 1, 1901/1902 in Portsmouth , Ohio) was an American journalist, banker and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was a member of the Ohio General Assembly and was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1883 to 1885 .

Career

James Wirt Newman was born in Highland County in 1841. The Newman family soon moved to Portsmouth, Ohio. His childhood was overshadowed by the Mexican-American War . He attended public schools and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1861 . During his studies he belonged to the Sigma Chi . Newman did not serve during the Civil War . He was the editor and owner of the Portsmouth Times for 33 years . He then held the post of President of the Central National Bank of Portsmouth.

Newman was active in the Democratic Party. He was president of the Scioto County Central Committee and attended state and national conventions as a delegate. In 1867 he was elected for Scioto County to the Ohio House of Representatives , where he served in 1868 and 1869. He then represented the 7th District in the Ohio Senate between 1872 and 1876 .

Newman defeated Republican Charles Townsend and two other candidates in the 1882 election for Secretary of State of Ohio, and then held the office from 1883 to 1885. He lost the 1884 election to Republican James Sidney Robinson .

Newman was Collector of Internal Revenue from 1885 to 1889 . He married Kate Moore on October 24, 1871. The couple had a son named Howard Ott Newman. Newman was the Exalted Ruler at Portsmouth Elks Lodge . He died either on January 1, 1901 or January 1, 1902.
