James H. Baker

James Heaton Baker (born May 6, 1829 in Monroe , Ohio , † May 25, 1913 in Mankato , Minnesota ) was an American officer and politician . He was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1856 to 1858 and Secretary of State of Minnesota from 1860 to 1862.

Career

James Heaton Baker was born and raised in Butler County in 1829 . He attended community schools. He then graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University . Baker became a teacher and director of the Female Seminary in Richmond ( Indiana ). In 1853 he acquired the Scioto Gazette in Chillicothe, Ohio. Baker was elected Secretary of State of Ohio in 1855 for a two-year term. Between 1860 and 1862 he served as Secretary of State of Minnesota.

During the Civil War , he served as a Colonel in the 10th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army from 1862 to 1863 . Baker was named Provost Marshal in charge of the Department of Missouri and held the post until the end of the war. He retired from the volunteers on October 21, 1865. In recognition of his services, President Andrew Johnson nominated him on January 13, 1866 for the receipt of the rank of Brevet - Brigadier General retrospectively to March 13, 1865. The US Senate confirmed his appointment on March 12, 1866.

After the war ended, Baker was appointed to the Register of Public Lands in the Missouri Federal Land Office in Boonville - a post he did for two years. He then moved to a farm in Minnesota. Baker was then appointed Commissioner of Pensions by President Ulysses S. Grant and held the post between 1871 and 1875. He died on May 25, 1913 in Mankato and was then buried in Glenwood Cemetery .

James Heaton Baker was married to Rose Lucia Thurston (1824–1873), daughter of Mary B. Morse (1803–1876) and Reuben Harris Thurston (1806–1880). The couple had at least two sons: Arthur Heaton (1852-1896) and Harry Edgar (1854-1920).
