Charles Townsend (born December 22, 1834 in Ohio , † January 12, 1900 in Athens , Ohio) was an American officer , lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was a member of the Ohio General Assembly and was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1881 to 1883 . He also belonged to the Freemasons .

Career

Charles Townsend, son of Rebecca Morrison (1807-1875) and Samuel H. Townsend (1805-1879), was about three years before the outbreak of the economic crisis of 1837 in Harrisville ( Harrison County ) and Harrisonville ( Meigs County born). The Townsend family moved to Athens County when he was a child . He attended community schools there. Then he went to Ohio University , where he taught, to help cover his expenses. In 1861 he graduated. He founded and ran the Decamp Institute in Meigs County when the Civil War broke out. In July 1861 he joined the Union Army and in August 1861 was appointed captain in the 30th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On January 27, 1864, he was promoted to major in the regiment . After the war was over, he went to Cincinnati Law School , where he graduated in 1866. Townsend has been elected prosecuting attorney for Athens County three times .

He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1877 and re-elected in 1879. When he was elected Secretary of State of Ohio in 1880, he resigned from his seat in Parliament. In his re-election in 1882, he suffered a defeat to the Democrat James W. Newman . He served as State Commander in the Grand Army of the Republic . In 1887 he was elected for the 9th District in the Ohio Senate .

Townsend married Margaret Jane Allen (1840-1910), daughter of Mary Jane Wilkins (1820-1900) and David Allen (1816-1903), in October 1859. The couple had three children: Helen Mar (1859-1938), Charles Homer (1863-1944), and Mary.
