Allen Trimble Wikoff (born November 15, 1825 in Adams County , Ohio , † July 22, 1902 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American officer , lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Secretary of State of Ohio from 1873 to 1875 .

Career

Allen Trimble Wikoff was born on a farm in Adams County in 1825. Nothing is known about his youth. During the Civil War he enlisted in 1862 as a lieutenant in the 91st Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to captain and served until the end of the war. Then he settled in Columbus. There he studied law and was admitted to the bar. In 1871 he became Chief Clerk in the Office of the Secretary of State of Ohio Isaac R. Sherwood . Wikoff was nominated by the Republicans for the office of Secretary of State in 1872. In the election he defeated the Democrats Aquila Wiley and Ferdinand Schumacher from the Progressive Party. In 1874 he was nominated again, but lost to the Democrat William Bell junior . John R. Buchtel from the Progressive Party also ran for the election.

Wikoff chaired the Republican State Executive Committee in 1874, 1875, and 1876 . Governor Rutherford B. Hayes appointed him adjutant general in 1876. In the same year he was elected to the National Republican Committee . He resigned from the post after a meeting.

President Ulysses S. Grant named him a pension agent for the State of Ohio in February 1877 . Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and Chester A. Arthur re-elected him in 1881. He held the post until July 31, 1885, when President Grover Cleveland replaced him with a Democrat.

Wikoff was appointed bankruptcy administrator for the Cleveland and Marietta Railroad in December 1885 . He held the post until 1893. Governor Asa S. Bushnell appointed him to the Ohio Canal Commission in 1896 . Wikoff was confirmed in office by Governor George K. Nash in 1900 . He held the post until his death. His body was buried in the Green Lawn Cemetery .
