Carmi Thompson

Carmi Alderman Thompson (born September 4, 1870 in Wayne County , West Virginia , † June 22, 1942 in Cuyahoga County , Ohio ) was an American politician, officer and government official. He belonged to the Republican Party .

Career

Carmi Alderman Thompson, son of Mary Elizabeth Polley (1850–1917) and Granville Thompson (1841–1929), was born in Wayne County about five years after the end of the Civil War . At the age of three years, the family moved to Ohio and settled in Ironton ( Lawrence County down). He grew up there and graduated from Ironton High School in 1886. He then attended Ohio State University , where he graduated in 1892. He then taught at high school in Bement ( Illinois ) for two years . He then studied law at Ohio State University's law school, graduating in 1895. After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Ironton. Thompson was named and later elected Ironton's City Solicitor . He held the post from 1896 to 1903.

During this time he fought in the Spanish-American War . Thompson was then a captain in Company I of the 7th  Infantry Regiment of Ohio. Between 1901 and 1906 he was a Colonel in the Ohio National Guard's 7th Regiment and in 1926 Commander in Chief with the United Spanish War Veterans .

Thompson was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1903 and then re-elected twice. He was a member of parliament from 1904 to 1906. During his last term in office, he held the post of speaker . Thompson was nominated Secretary of State in 1906 and was later elected. He then resigned from his seat in the House of Representatives and held the post between 1907 and 1911. President William Howard Taft appointed him Treasurer of the United States - a post he held from November 22, 1912 to March 31, 1913. Thompson then worked in the iron ore and shipping business. In 1921 he was on the advisory committee of the Conference on Defense of Defense Equipment, which was held in Washington, DC . President Calvin Coolidge appointed him special envoy to review the economy and domestic conditions in the Philippines . He ran unsuccessfully for governor of Ohio in 1922 . The Democrat A. Victor Donahey went out of the race as the winner. Thompson died on June 20, 1942 during World War II in Cuyahoga County and was then buried in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.
