Ivy Baker Priest (born September 7, 1905 in Kimberly , Utah , † June 23, 1975 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American government official.

Career

Ivy Baker, daughter of Clara Fernley and Orange D. Baker, was born in Piute County about nine years before the outbreak of World War I. Her father worked as a gold digger in Kimberly and later in copper mining in the town of Bingham Canyon ( Salt Lake County ). Ivy Baker had been involved in politics since high school. At the time she was working on registering voters during a mayoral campaign. She took part in 1932 as a delegate to the Republican State Convention and in 1934 ran unsuccessfully in Utah for a seat in the US Congress . On December 7, 1935, she married her first husband Roy Fletcher Priest (1884-1959) in Salt Lake City . During the Second World War , she was elected to the Republican National Committee of Utah in 1944 , where she served for several years. She ran for a second time unsuccessfully for the US Congress in Utah in 1950. During Dwight D. Eisenhower's election campaign for the presidency, she took over the leadership of the women's division in the Republican National Committee. She was credited with the successful campaign to win the women's votes, which led to Eisenhower's victory. President Eisenhower then named her Treasurer of the United States . She held the post from January 28, 1953 to January 29, 1961. On June 20, 1961, she married her second husband, Sidney William Stevens (1902–1972), who was originally called Silberman, in Los Angeles . She became national chairwoman of the Easter Seals in 1967 . That same year, she was elected California State Treasurer - a post she held for two terms from 1967 until her death in 1975. She died of cancer in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, and was then interred in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Salt Lake City.

She is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . The actress Patricia Ann Priest was their daughter.
