Mary Ellen Withrow

Mary Ellen Hinamon Withrow (born October 2, 1930 in Marion County , Ohio ) is the only person in United States history to hold the post of treasurer at all three levels of government - regional, state and national. She belongs to the Democratic Party .

Career

Withrow began her political career in 1969 when she was the first woman elected to the Elgin Local School Board in Marion County. She was elected Treasurer of Marion County in 1976 and re-elected in 1980. In 1982 she successfully ran for the post of Treasurer of the State of Ohio . She was re-elected in 1986 and 1990.

US President Bill Clinton nominated her in February 1994 for the post of Treasurer of the United States . Withrow was unanimously approved by the US Senate . On March 2, 1994, she took her oath of office. Her duties included overseeing the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and the United States Mint . During her tenure, she introduced the US Mint's 50 State Quarter Program , approved the issuance of Sacagawea dollars, and oversaw the complete redesign of the new $ 5, $ 10, $ 20, $ 50, and $ 100 bills. Her term ended on January 20, 2001.

Withrow was inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame , served as President of both the National Association of State Treasurers and the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers , served on the Board of Women Executives in the State Government , and is recipient of a Women Executives in the State Government Fellowship at Harvard University and served in the historical society of the US Treasury. She is currently an Executive Advisor with the World Reserve Monetary Exchange .
