Harry S. Day

Harry Sanderson Day (born May 16, 1871 in Fremont , Ohio , † June 27, 1956 ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was Treasurer of State of Ohio from 1923 to 1927 and from 1931 to 1937 .

Career

Harry Sanderson Day, son of Emily Williams and John Day, was born and raised in Sandusky County about six years after the end of the Civil War . He attended public schools in Fremont. He then worked for the railway postal service until 1891. In 1891, Day enrolled at Oberlin College . He also attended Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. In 1901 he married Lola Garvin. The couple had a daughter named Mary Elizabeth. Day was appointed Deputy Postmaster in 1906 - a post he held until 1915. In 1919 he became president of the Ohio Nursery Association. He ran it for many years. Day served as mayor of Fremont for two terms between 1918 and 1921. He was elected Treasurer of State of Ohio in 1922 and re-elected in 1924. In 1926 he ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for governor of Ohio. Day was re-elected Treasurer of State in 1930 and re-elected in 1932 and 1934. He later served as a director of the Fremont Federal Savings and Loan Company and president of the Liberty Banking Company until his resignation in 1955 . In his later years, Day lived in Fremont at 1215 Birchard Ave. He died at Fremont Memorial Hospital in 1956 .
