Samuel Bonsall Campbell (born July 2, 1846 in Jefferson County , Ohio - † May 30, 1917 ) was an American soldier and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Ohio Treasurer of State from 1896 to 1900 .

Career

Samuel Bonsall Campbell was born in Jefferson County about five weeks after the outbreak of the Mexican-American War . He attended public schools until he was eleven when he was left to fend for himself. In the following years he worked as a newspaper seller and clerk . When he was old enough, he enlisted in the Union Army after the outbreak of the civil war . He enlisted in the 157th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment . After the end of the war he returned to Steubenville, Ohio, where he worked for the Miners and Mechanics Bank . Campbell was elected County Treasurer in 1879 and re-elected in 1881. Ohio Treasurer of State John C. Brown appointed him cashier in the Treasury in 1886. In 1892 he became Chief Clerk under Secretary of State of Ohio Christian L. Poorman . Campbell was elected Treasurer of State of Ohio in 1895 and re-elected in 1897. He died in 1917 and was then buried in Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio.
