William T. Cope

William Taylor Cope (born December 25, 1836 in Columbiana County , Ohio , † November 26, 1902 in Columbus , Ohio) was an American officer and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Treasurer of State of Ohio from 1892 to 1896 .

Career

William Taylor Cope was born in Columbiana County several months before the economic crisis began in 1837 . Nothing is known about his youth. In his early years he worked as a coal speculator or trader. During the Civil War he served as a captain in the 143rd Volunteer Infantry. Cope was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1885 and re-elected in 1887. He sat in the 67th and 68th General Assemblies. Then he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he worked as a coal wholesaler. Cope was elected Treasurer of State in 1891 and re-elected in 1893. He later worked in a bank in Columbus. He died in Columbus in 1902 and was buried there in Green Lawn Cemetery .
