Career

John David Herbert, son of Thomas J. Herbert , future governor of Ohio, was born during the Great Depression. Nothing is known about his youth. Herbert studied law and began practicing law in 1957 after receiving his license to practice law. He was elected Treasurer of State of Ohio in 1962 and re-elected in 1966. In 1970 he won the Republican nomination for the office of Attorney General of Ohio, but suffered defeat in the next election because of his ties to the Crofters scandal. The Republicans were accused of channeling government revenue to campaign donors. Nearly all Republicans who ran for election in 1970 suffered defeat. In this context, the Democrat John J. Gilligan was elected governor of Ohio.

Herbert lived in Cincinnati and was Corporate Counsel with Ace Doran Hauling and Rigging Company.
