Before the school hearing on the matter, a grand jury had refused to prosecute Wells. Deters, known for being tough on criminals, said prosecutors conducted a thorough investigation. The accusation lacks any credibility. He said the school trial severely violated Wells 'rights to a fair trial, as the burden of proof was on Wells' side, not his accuser. Furthermore, incompetent people examined the forensic evidence and prevented Wells from presenting the evidence that would have proven his innocence. Following the Xavier University's decision, Deters called for Wells' expulsion to be re-examined.

Deters is a member of the Cincinnati Bar Association, the National District Attorneys Association, and the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association. He also served on the University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees, the Ohio Organized Crime Commission, and the Southern Ohio Leukemia Foundation.
