Frank White (born December 12, 1856 in Stillman Valley , Ogle County , Illinois , †  March 23, 1940 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He served as the eighth governor of the state of North Dakota from 1901 to 1905 and as Treasurer of the United States between 1921 and 1928 .

Early years

Frank White studied engineering at the University of Illinois after elementary school . In 1882, White came to Valley City in the Dakota Territory . There he bought land from the railroad and built a farm. White became a member of the North Dakota National Guard. In 1890 he was elected a Republican to the North Dakota House of Representatives. From 1892 he sat in the State Senate . He resigned this mandate at the outbreak of the Spanish-American War of 1898 in order to take part in the fighting as a major with his National Guard. Among other things, he was involved in the capture of Manila . After returning home, he worked as a farmer as well as in the insurance and real estate business. He also remained politically active. In 1900 he was elected the new governor of North Dakota with 59 percent of the vote.

North Dakota Governor

White took up his new office in early January 1901. After a successful re-election he was able to exercise it until January 1905. This also made him the first North Dakota governor to serve two terms. During his tenure, the country's budget deficit was reduced and the north wing of the Capitol was completed. The eighth judicial district was also established. After the end of his second term, White returned to his private interests. Until 1913 he was president of a fire insurance company. In 1914 he founded his own company ( Middlewest Trust Company ) and was its president until the USA entered the First World War . During the war, White became active again in the military. As a colonel he came to France with a regiment from North Dakota , but without being used at the front. After his return he became the head of his company again.

Treasurer of the USA

In 1921, Frank White of was US President Warren G. Harding as the new Treasurer ( Treasurer appointed) of the USA, which he high office within the Treasury held. In this capacity he replaced John Burke , who had also been Governor of North Dakota between 1907 and 1913. Frank White remained in office under President Calvin Coolidge . In 1928, White joined as Treasurer back to President of Southern Mortage Guarantee Corporation in Chattanooga ( Tennessee to be). White died in March 1940 and was buried with military honors in Arlington National Cemetery. He was married to Elsie Hadley, with whom he had a son.
