Elmore Y. Sarles

Elmore Yocum Sarles (born January 15, 1859 in Wonewoc , Juneau County , Wisconsin , † February 14, 1929 in Hillsboro , North Dakota ) was an American politician and from 1905 to 1907 the ninth governor of the state of North Dakota.

Early years and advancement

Elmore Sarles attended Prescott public schools and Galesville University . He was one of five classmates who would later become governors of North Dakota. Sarles soon became a successful businessman. In 1881 he moved to Hillsboro, Dakota Territory . There he founded a bank that became the First National Bank of Hillsboro in 1885 . Subsequently, Sarles and his partners also participated in other banks in Dakota and Minnesota . Sarles was also in the timber trade and real estate business and owned vast estates in Traill County .

North Dakota Governor

Sarles was a member of the Republican Party . After a term as mayor of Hillsboro, he was elected the new governor in 1904 with 70:25 percent of the vote against the Democrat Marthinus F. Hegge. As governor, he used his experience as a successful businessman and was able to generate a budget surplus of $ 200,000 in the two years of his tenure. Food laws have also been improved. After a re-election in 1906 had failed, he had to leave office on January 9, 1907.

After the end of his tenure, Sarles withdrew from politics and returned to his private interests. He was involved in various businesses and banks. Elmore Sarles died in 1929. He was married to Anna York, with whom he had four children.
