William Langer

William Langer (born September 30, 1886 in Casselton , Cass County , North Dakota , † November 8, 1959 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician and from 1933 to 1934 the 17th and from 1937 to 1939 the 21st governor from North Dakota. He also represented this state in the US Senate from 1941 to 1959 .

Early years and political advancement

William Langer attended the University of North Dakota after elementary school . There he made his law exam in 1906. He then also attended Columbia University . Between 1915 and 1917, Langer was a district attorney in Morton County . From 1917 to 1921 he was Attorney General of North Dakota. At first he was close to the Nonpartisan League , but later distanced himself from it. In 1932 he was elected as the candidate of the Republican Party for the new governor of North Dakota, where he prevailed with 55:45 percent of the vote against the Democrat Herbert C. Depuy.

North Dakota Governor

Langer's tenure coincided with the Great Depression . He initiated an aid program for the affected farmers. The opposition to him was quite strong and accused him of fraud and favoritism in office. As a result, Langer was deposed as governor on July 17, 1934 and sentenced to 18 months in prison and a $ 10,000 fine. Lieutenant Governor Ole Olson ended the begun term for the deposed governor. William Langer did not accept this situation, went through other legal instances and was finally acquitted. He was then able to apply again for the office of governor in 1936. He also managed to win the election against incumbent Walter Welford and was able to complete a full term as governor between January 6, 1937 and January 5, 1939. During this time, pension insurance and child care were improved.

US Senator

In 1938 Langer applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate. Two years later, however, it made it into Congress . Langer remained a US Senator in Washington until his death in 1959. He was a member of several committees. William Langer was married to Lydia Cady, with whom he had four children.
