Joseph M. Devine

Joseph McMurray Devine (born March 15, 1861 in Wheeling , Virginia , † August 31, 1938 in Mandan , North Dakota ) was an American politician and from 1898 to 1899 the 6th governor of the state of North Dakota.

Early years

Born in what is now West Virginia , Joseph Devine attended local schools in his homeland. He then studied at the University of West Virginia at Morgantown . In 1884 he moved to LaMoure County in what was then the Dakota Territory . He was a school councilor there for ten years.

Political career

As a member of the Republican Party , Devine was elected lieutenant governor of his state in 1896 . When the incumbent governor Frank A. Briggs died of tuberculosis in August 1898, Devine had to end his term in office. This amounted to just under five months until January 3, 1899. During this time, Devine was primarily promoting school policy.

After the end of his short term in office, he became vice governor again between 1899 and 1901. He remained connected to the school system in his further life. His last political position was between 1923 and 1933 as head of the North Dakota Immigration Service. After that, he retired. Joseph Devine died in August 1938. He was married twice and had four children.
