Eli Shortridge

Eli CD Shortridge (born March 29, 1830 in Cabell County , Virginia , † February 4, 1908 in Devils Lake , North Dakota ) was an American politician and from 1893 to 1895 the third governor of the state of North Dakota.

Life

Born in what is now West Virginia , Eli Shortridge moved with his parents to Monroe County , Missouri , in 1833 . There he attended the local schools. In 1882 he settled in Larimore in the Dakota Territory . In his new home he took part in political events. He was a member of the Populist Party , which nominated him as its candidate for the upcoming 1892 gubernatorial election. With the help of the Democratic Party , he was able to win the election against the Republican incumbent Andrew H. Burke .

Shortridge began his two-year term on January 3, 1893. During his tenure, funding for the south wing of the Capitol was secured. The North Dakota governor's office was also purchased. The laws of the state were revised again. In 1894 Shortridge waived possible re-election. Therefore, he resigned on January 10, 1895 from his office. He was then employed by the US Land Agency in Devils Lake. He died there in 1908. Eli Shortridge was married twice and had a total of five children.
