John Miller

John Miller (born October 29, 1843 in Dryden , Tompkins County , New York , †  October 26, 1908 in Duluth , Minnesota ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was the first governor of the state of North Dakota from 1889 to 1891 .

Life

John Miller attended local schools in his home country. In 1878 he and partner Jeremiah W. Dwight came to the Dakota Territory and bought 17,000 acres in the Red River Valley in Richland County . The Dwight Farm and Land Company was established on this land . Miller was a member of the Republican Party and in 1889 participated as a delegate to the North Dakota Constituent Assembly. In the same year he was elected the first governor of the new state of North Dakota with 66.8 percent of the vote against the Democrat William N. Roach . His first and most important task was to set up a functioning administration. He refused to introduce a state lottery in his country. At the end of his two-year term, Miller waived possible re-election.

After the end of his tenure, Miller returned to his farm and from 1896 organized the John Miller Land Company . In 1906 he became president of the newly formed Chaffee-Miller Milling Corporation . John Miller died in 1908. He was married to Addie S. Tucker, with whom he had one child.
