Carmel Valley AVA (recognized since December 14, 1982) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the administrative area of Monterey County , southeast of Carmel-by-the-Sea . The wine-growing region lies within the Santa Lucia Range along the Carmel River . The vineyards are mostly above 300 m above sea level. NN and are therefore not cooled by the coastal mists of the Pacific . The mountain locations are thus warmer than the valley locations. Therefore, mostly late-ripening grape varieties are grown.
