Chalone AVA (recognized since June 14, 1982) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is within the administrative areas of Monterey County and San Benito County . The area in the Gabilan Mountains east of Soledad and not far from Pinnacles National Park got its name from the Chalone Peaks. The floor consists of limestone and weathered granite. The best-known winery is certainly Chalone Vineyard , which took an excellent third place in the Paris wine jury in 1976 and, with its white wine made from Chardonnay, left many top Burgundy wines behind. Brosseau Vineyards, Naylor Dry Hole Vineyard, Blue Mountain Vineyard and Michaud Vineyard have also made a name for themselves.
