John "Jack" Dalrymple (born October 16, 1948 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). Dalrymple was Governor of North Dakota from December 7, 2010 to December 15, 2016 . He had previously served as lieutenant governor in that state since December 2000 .

Life

Jack Dalrymple grew up on his family's farm in Casselton, North Dakota. This was established in 1875 as the first large-scale wheat farm in what was then the Dakota Territory . He attended Yale University , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies . He then returned to North Dakota and took care of running the family farm. He also worked for the Casselton Labor Market Commission and co-founded a treatment facility for former alcohol and drug addicts. In 1983 he was named the Most Outstanding Young Farmer in the United States.

His political career began when he entered the North Dakota House of Representatives , to which he served for eight terms from 1985 onwards. In the meantime, he ran a by-election in 1992 for the mandate of the late US Senator Quentin N. Burdick , but was clearly defeated by the Democrat Kent Conrad . In 2000 he was elected Vice Governor of his state as running mate of John Hoeven ; together with this he was confirmed in office in 2004 and 2008.

Governor Hoeven ran successfully in the Senate election in November 2010 to succeed the out-of-office Democrat Byron Dorgan and will take over his mandate in Washington, DC in January 2011 . As planned, he handed over the governorship in December 2010 to his previous deputy Dalrymple. This named the former federal attorney Drew Wrigley as his own successor as lieutenant governor. In 2012 Dalrymple was then confirmed in the regular gubernatorial election in this office. In 2016 he declined to run for private reasons and his term of office ended in mid-December 2016. Doug Burgum was elected as his successor .

Jack Dalrymple is married and has four daughters.
