Aluminum Kazakhstan ( Kazakh Қазақстан алюминийі ; Russian Алюминий Казахстана ; English Aluminum of Kazakhstan ) is a Kazakh mining and metallurgy company based in Pavlodar , part of the international Eurasian Natural Resources group. It is mainly active in the extraction of bauxite and its further processing into aluminum oxide .

history

In September 1955, the Council of Ministers of the USSR decided to establish a plant for the production of alumina in the territory of the Kazakh SSR . It should have an annual capacity of 600,000 tons. The first stage of the plant went into operation in 1964, the second and third stages were implemented in the following five years, increasing the capacity to one million tons of aluminum oxide per year. In October 1987 the plant was integrated into the newly established production association Kasglinosjom (Казглинозём), which also included the Krasnooktjabrskoje and Turgaiskoje opencast mines.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the production association was converted into a joint stock company and registered as such on January 5, 1994. The company has been called Aluminum Kazakhstan since 1996 and is part of Eurasian Natural Resources .

Corporate structure

Aluminum Kazakhstan employs around 10,000 people. The areas of activity include the mining and processing of bauxite and limestone as well as the production of aluminum oxide. The company is located in the Pavlodar (aluminum oxide production) and Qostanai (bauxite mining) areas. Aluminum Kazakhstan has the following locations:

  • The Pavlodar aluminum plant ( ) in Pavlodar has existed since 1964 and produces aluminum oxide . With a capacity of around 1.4 million tons of aluminum oxide per year, the plant is one of the largest aluminum oxide factories in the world. The majority is sold to Rusal , about a third is processed into aluminum in a nearby factory .
  • The Pavlodar TEZ-1 ( ) power plant is located in the immediate vicinity of the aluminum plant in Pavlodar and ensures its energy supply. In addition, the thermal power plant supplies around 40 percent of the residents of Pavlodar with heat.
  • The open pit Keregetas ( ) is located near the village Üschqulyn in Pavlodar region and was put into operation 1966th It is used to extract limestone and has an annual capacity of over two million tons.
  • The Krasnooktjabrskoje ( ) opencast mine is located south of the city of Lisakovsk in the Qostanai region. The production of bauxite started here in 1950.
  • The open pit Turgaiskoje ( ) located around the city arkalyk area Qostanai around. The mining of bauxite started here in 1961. Since the opencast mine only contributes a fraction to the bauxite supply of the plant in Pavlodar and the reserves are nearing the end, production is to be discontinued in 2023.
