economy
The city was a center of the Soviet space program . Many cosmonauts landed nearby in the Kazakh steppe and first came to Arqalyq before traveling on to Baikonur . Even today, Russian Soyuz space capsules land in the vicinity of Arqalyq. In addition, there was a launch system for anti-aircraft missiles , the only system from which the FLA units of the Eastern Bloc armies could actually launch airborne targets.
Today, a bauxite mine is the city's largest employer. It belongs to the company Aluminum Kazakhstan . Since the reserves are nearing the end, the production is to be stopped in 2023.
The city itself is very remote. The regional airport has been closed and the nearest town is 15 hours away by train as Arqalyq is at the end of the Jessil railway junction .
