Tobyl ( Kazakh and Russian Тобыл ; 2020 Satobolsk / Затобольск) is a town in the area Qostanai in Kazakhstan . At the last census in 2009 it had 22,908 inhabitants.

Surname

The historical name goes back to the Tobol River . From the city of Qostanai it is on the opposite bank; the name means something like "on the other side of the Tobol". After the collapse of the Soviet Union , there were mass renaming with the aim of removing Russian-speaking place names and replacing them with Kazakh-speaking ones. Historical maps reveal that Sabotol is one of the few places that kept its name. On March 18, 2018, during a municipal meeting, an initiative was decided to change the name to Тобыл, which corresponds to the Kazakh spelling of the name of the river, and to raise the town to the status of a city. However, the approval of the regional and state government is necessary for an appropriate implementation. Alternatively, the place name Кұтты алап (Kutty alap) was introduced as a suggestion. The elevation to the city and the renaming to Tobyl was carried out by the presidential decree of January 2, 2020.

geography

The city is located at 150  m above sea level in northern Kazakhstan, about 150 kilometers from the border with Russia and about four kilometers east of the center of the city of Qostanai . Both places, Qostanai in the west and Tobyl in the east, are separated by the Tobol River , which flows north into the West Siberian lowlands .

history

The place was founded in 1881 by resettlers from the Russian governorates of Tambov , Saratow and Voronezh .
