The Tobol ( Russian Тобо́л ; Kazakh Тобы́л Tobyl ) is a 1591 kilometer long tributary of the Irtysh in the Asian part of Kazakhstan and Russia .

River course

The river arises on the border of the Kazakh region of Qostanai and the Russian Oblast Orenburg on the eastern slope of the Southern Urals from the small, approximately 30-40 km long and periodically drying up source rivers Bosbije from the left and Kokpektyssai from the right. From there it flows northeast over the Turgai Plateau . After seven dams and about 320 kilometers, the Tobol reaches the West Siberian lowlands near the town of Rudny . It flows through the Kazakh region of Qostanai and the Russian oblasts of Kurgan and Tyumen . At Tobolsk it flows into the Irtysh.

The catchment area of the Tobol covers 426,000  km² (for comparison: the total area of Germany is 357,000 km²).
